Kuiper Objects

Wanted to try something so I mashed this together. Made a small story for it too!
______
I remember like it was yesterday when my grandfather told me the story of the 3 gargantuan objects out there on the corner of our solar system. They were discovered 175 years ago in a remote section of the Kuiper Belt near a small planetoid after sensors picked up abnormal surges of energy.

The excitement of this discovery was quickly replaced with frustration as all attempts to board or closer inspect the alien spachips soon proved to be impossible... Some kind of barrier prevented any physical contact to be made on a atomic level and remains so to this day.

This sent shockwaves trough all of mankind and answers were needed.
Rather bizarrely only 2 breakthroughs have ever been made.

The first of them was made by using the most complex sensor array ever build to estimate the age of the monoliths. Numbers were mind-bendingly ancient generally being agreed that they were older then life on earth itself.

As half a century passed without any movement or action from the giants they were deemed safe by inactivity and a general feeling of cautious and resigned optimism arised. The artefacts had been there for god knows how long and apparently would remain so... life would carry on.
Eventually their safe status allowed tourism and private corporations to make their own inspections of the alien vessels.

The second breakthrough was reached by a deepspace exploration enterprise that managed to start harnessing power from the monoliths. It soon became apparent the amount of power these things produced were beyond anything humanity ever dreamed about.
Coincidently this came at a fortunate time as the march of science would take a leap once more. What had been a mere theoretical dream due to the lack of a sufficiently powerful energy source would now be possible and spread humanity across the stars.. The first ever jump gate could now be made and powered by the static relics.

Nowadays traffic from the solar system all come neatly together for their journey onwards while the giants still sit there, mysteriously silent and unmoving.
